Is your epoxy resin food safe?

While our epoxy resin proucts do not have official FDA approvals certifying direct contact with food, once the epoxy resin has been properly measured, mixed and cured it becomes an inert plastic.

As an inert plastic, it is FDA compliant for incidental food contact per FDA code, 21CFR175.300 which states "Resinous and polymeric coatings may be safely used as the food-contact surface of articles intended for use in producing, manufacturing, packing, processing, preparing, treating, packaging, transporting, or holding food" as long as it is in accordance with the prescribed conditions listed in the FDA code.

This code can be found by following this link here: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cdrh/cfdocs/cfcfr/CFRSearch.cfm?fr=175.300

Additional Safety Precautions:

  • We recommend not heating any cured epoxy resin more than 165F.
  • Do not place food or liquid with temperatures at or above 165F onto the epoxy resin surface.
  • Do not place the epoxy resin project it into a microwave to heat food or liquids.
  • Do not utilize the project for intermitten food contact if you believe the epoxy resin is not fully cured or has loose particles from possible chipping or cutting.

Epoxy resin is not antimicrobial. The project should be disinfected after each use that includes serving food. We do not recommend eating directly from epoxy resin materials or cutting directly on the epoxy resin surface.

Again, Our epoxy is safe for incidental food contact not FDA approval.

Epoxy resin food safety standards

Many other epoxy resin companies may manufacture their products differently.

So not all epoxy resins can be automatically deemed safe just by merely checking the ingredients. In order for epoxy resin to be certified food safe, it must be tested according to food safety standards by the FDA.

This certification process tests the ingredients used in the product, how each chemical reacts to each other and its curing process.

The certification may includes taking note of the amount of BPA leftover of the product, and harmful Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) that it may emit after curing. A product should be found with low or no trace amounts of BPA, and low or no VOCs in order to be deemed food safe.

Again, Our epoxy is safe for incidental food contact not FDA approval.

Remarkably interesting with useful links. Thank you for supplying us with so much information. I think this is one of the most controversial topics associated with tumbler art today. I came here to learn, and I certainly did that. Thanx again @theepoxyresinstore. Jerri

I used to use resin years ago and I am just coming back to it. Before getting started again I wanted to update myself on the properties of resin and this article told me everything I needed to know about creating food serving pieces.

I just poured a 9 × 13 clip board. Does anyone have any idea how long it will take to set? I used premium quality clear epoxy resin.
