Let us learn how to cast a Flower inside an Epoxy Resin skull with fewer bubbles.
Thank you for sharing your talent & creating a video demo with us @naptimecreations_tish!
Here is a list of what we need:
- Floral Epoxy Resin
- Measuring cups
- Wooden mixing stick
- Skull mold
- toothpick
- dried rose
- Heat gun
- 91% Isopropyl Alcohol
- Light blue pigment
- Black pigment
- Skull Mold
- Mold Release Spray
Before we start, this is a 3-day process. We are filling 1/3 of the mold with epoxy resin and then securing the dried flower in it. After curing, we will fill the next 1/3 with another color and let it cure. Finally, on the last day we will fill the rest of the mold.
Step 1:
Mix 4oz total of the Floral Epoxy 3 to 1 mixture. Use a wooden mixing stick to slowly mix by hand for approximately 3-5 minutes. Be sure to scrape the sides & bottom thoroughly.
- Be sure not to over-mix.
- The movement creates unwanted chemical reactions resulting in more heat. This can speed up the process and change the makeup of the epoxy resin.
*** Special notes ***
When you think you are good, scrape the edges and bottom AGAIN!
Look for those mix streamers trailing the stir stick. Sticky spots and uncured spots at the end mean we did not mix thoroughly.
GET THE MIXTURE OUT OF THE CONTAINER as quickly as possible. Do not let it sit in the container for extended periods of time.
Step 2:
Slowly mix in the light blue pigment. Mix well. Try not to whip bubbles into the mix.
*** Special note ***
Before pouring into the mold, prep the mold with mold release spray.
Now we can slowly pour our mixture into the skull mold.
Step 3:
After pouring a small amount, check for any pesky bubbles. You can use a toothpick to pop a few bubbles lingering at the bottom. A small hand torch can be used too.
Step 4:
After we pour a little more, let's check for bubbles again. 91% Isopropyl Alcohol in a spray bottle can help with releasing bubbles as well.
*** Special Note ***
The key to fewer bubbles is slowly mixing and slowly pouring. We don't need to pour it all at once. We can stop. Release the bubbles as we see them and continue pouring. We are not in a rush.
Step 5:
Place the dried flower.
Step 6:
Let it cure for 24 hours at 75F.
Step 7:
Check the cure for some tackiness. The form should be firmish and not watery. If watery we need to troubleshoot.
Now we can prep the other half of the mixture we need. Create another 4oz mixture of the Floral Epoxy resin 3 to 1 ratio. After mixed properly with the colors we want, slowly pour the epoxy mixture into the mold.
*** Special Note ***
The key to fewer bubbles, is slowly mixing and slowly pouring. We don't need to pour it all at once. We can stop. Release the bubbles with recommended tools, and continue pouring. We are not in a rush.
Step 8:
Let it cure for 24 hours at 75F.
Step 9:
Pour the last 4oz of the epoxy mixture, this time tinted with black pigment.
Step 10:
Let it cure for 24 hours at 75F before demolding.
*** Special Note ***
Check for firmness and tackiness before demolding. If not firm or it is still tacky, let it cure for another day.
Hope this was helpful.
