How to Install an Epoxy Flake Garage Floor
(DIY Installation Guide)
Step 1 – Prepare the Concrete
Proper surface preparation is the most important step for a long-lasting floor.
-
Sweep and vacuum the entire garage floor.
-
Remove oil, grease, or contaminants using a degreaser.
-
Mechanically grind the concrete using a floor grinder with diamond tooling.
-
Vacuum all dust thoroughly.
Goal: The concrete should have a clean, porous profile similar to 80–100 grit sandpaper.
Step 2 – Repair Cracks and Damage
Before coating, repair any defects in the concrete.
-
Fill cracks and joints with an epoxy crack repair or patching compound.
-
Allow repairs to cure.
-
Grind smooth if needed so the floor is level.
Step 3 – Apply the Epoxy Base Coat
-
Pour the mixed epoxy onto the floor in ribbons.
-
Use a notched squeegee to spread the epoxy evenly.
-
Back roll with a 3/8" lint-free roller.
Coverage:
Your kit covers approximately 350 square feet.
Step 4 – Broadcast the Decorative Flakes
Immediately after applying the epoxy base coat:
-
Grab handfuls of decorative flakes.
-
Toss them upward like feeding chickens.
-
Let the flakes fall naturally onto the wet epoxy.
Continue broadcasting until the entire floor is covered.
Your kit includes 30 pounds of Torginol Domino flakes (1/4"), which provide excellent coverage and create a beautiful decorative finish.
Step 5 – Allow the Floor to Cure
Let the epoxy cure before continuing.
Typical cure times:
• Light foot traffic: 12–18 hours
• Vehicle traffic: 48–72 hours
Temperature will affect cure time.
Step 6 – Scrape Excess Flakes
After the epoxy cures:
-
Use a floor scraper to remove loose flakes.
-
Scrape in multiple directions to knock down rough edges.
-
Vacuum all debris thoroughly.
This step creates a smooth and uniform surface.
Step 7 – Apply the Protective Topcoat
Finish the system with a clear protective topcoat.
-
Mix the clear coating according to instructions.
-
Apply with a roller evenly across the floor.
-
Allow to cure fully.
The topcoat seals the flakes and provides:
• chemical resistance
• abrasion resistance
• UV stability
• long-term durability
