We will cover how to reduce bubbles in small epoxy castings with Liquid Diamonds & how to protect your Silicone Molds.
Start with:
Quick Video Demo Listed Below.
The secret & most crucial step to decreasing volume of bubbles in any pour is slowly adding part A to part B and slowly mixing them together without whipping air into the mix.
Step 1:
Measure 2 parts of resin and 1 part of hardener by volume. Mix together slowly for approximatley 5 minutes.
Slow and steady reduces bubble action.
Vigourous stirring leads to accidental whipping of bubbles into the mixture. Pay close attention and you can literally see bubbles being injected into the mixture the faster you stir.
Step 2:
If you are adding color, complete the first 5 minute mixing session then add the colors. Again slowly mix the colors into the batch.
Step 3:
We like to let the mixture sit for an additional minute to allow any bubbles we mixed in to rise to the top surface of the container.
Step 4:
Use a mini torch (waving it 6-12 inches from epoxy) to release bubbles from the surface.
Step 5:
Lightly spray the interior of the silicone mold with our Mold Release spray (waving 6-8 inches from mold).
After 20-30 seconds, the mold is ready to be poured into.
Step 6:
Slowly pour the Liquid Diamonds mixture into the mold.
***Try slowly pouring a small amount and stop. Look for bubbles. Use the mini-torch. Pour again. Stop. Look for bubbles. Use the mini-torch. Repeat until completed.
Step 7:
Monitor for final surface bubbles.
Use a mini torch (waving 6-12 inches from epoxy) to release the bubbles from the surface again.
Step 8:
Allow approximatley 24 hours to cure before touching.
Gently test an edge of the project to see if dry to touch.
If dry, slowly pull the project out of the mold.
Because we treated the silicone mold with mold release, it should be much easier to release.
This helps prevent unwanted rips and tears to the mold, ultimately lengthening its life span.
Hope this has helped.
Next level, is investing in a vacum chamber. This eliminates bubbles.
More on that in a future post.
